14th Annual Linda Sweezer Memorial Juneteenth Festival is Coming to Kent This Juneteenth
By Besa Gordon - If you're looking for a meaningful way to celebrate Juneteenth this year, Kent is the place to be. On Saturday, June 21st, two powerful community events will be happening side by side at Morrill Meadows Park, and both are free, family-friendly, and centered on Black excellence, health, and history.
🎉 14th Annual Linda Sweezer Memorial Juneteenth Festival
Hosted by the Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC)
🕙 10AM–5PM | 📍10600 SE 248th St., Kent, WA
🍽 Free cultural meal served at 12:30PM
🌐 kentblackactioncommission.org
This is one of the most anticipated Juneteenth events in South King County, and it’s easy to see why. You’ve got live music, dance, poetry, community booths, and even free food. And this year’s theme—“Freedom Through Culture and Community”—says it all.
Here’s a peek at what’s in store:
✨ A performance by jazz guitarist Michael Powers
🎤 Local hip hop, gospel, and spoken word artists
🌍 African and Afro-Caribbean dance presentations
🍗 Free soul food and global dishes (yes, free!)
🧒🏾 Youth crafts, cultural storytelling, and community resource booths
This event is all about celebrating Black history, resilience, and creativity—and it’s open to everyone who wants to show up, learn, and vibe with the community.
💉 Health & Wellness at the Linda Sweezer Memorial Celebration
🕛 12PM–4PM | 📍Same location (Morrill Meadows Park)
📲 Scan the QR code on the flyer to pre-register for vaccines
🔗 WAverify.doh.wa.gov to access your vaccine record
Now while you’re enjoying the festival, don’t forget that the Washington State Department of Health’s Care-a-Van will also be posted up with FREE and low-cost vaccines for kids and adults.
Here’s what they’re offering:
COVID-19 (Pfizer + Moderna)
Flu shots
Mpox
Childhood vaccines (6 months–19 years)
Uninsured kids can get vaccinated at no cost, and adults with insurance should bring their info and vaccine cards if possible. Heads up—if you’re with Kaiser or TriCare, they won’t be able to vaccinate you here, but they’ll still answer your questions.
You can just walk up, but I’d recommend pre-registering by scanning the QR code on the flyer to save time.
📍Pull Up for a Day That Honors the Past & Pours Into the Present
Both of these events honor the legacy of Juneteenth in different ways—one through music, culture, and connection… the other through public health and access to care. And together, they create a space for joy, healing, and Black liberation in real time.
So grab your lawn chairs, your family, and your curiosity—and make June 21st a full-circle kind of Saturday.
