Dr. Tafona Ervin Discusses Burnout, Decision Fatigue, and ‘The Release Experience’
In a fast-paced, high-stress world, leadership often comes with a hidden cost: burnout, isolation, and decision fatigue. On a recent episode of The Day With Trae, host Trae Holiday sat down with Dr. Tafona Ervin to discuss how her venture, the Ervin Consulting Group, is working to change that narrative.
Through a blend of executive coaching and deeply holistic community building, Dr. Ervin and her husband Brandon are helping high-capacity individuals step off the transactional treadmill and find a safe space to breathe.
Doubling Down on Legacy
Founded in 2018, the Ervin Consulting Group was born out of a desire to build something sustainable for Ervin’s family while leveraging her and Brandon’s extensive professional backgrounds to support others. As Dr. Ervin shared, the inspiration came from a deeply personal milestone.
"My last child, my youngest, really catalyzed us to thinking differently about what we wanted for ourselves and our families, and how we want to take our talents... to do something that's going to double down on our family and our legacy,” she said.
Recognizing that both new and long-standing organizations often struggle to find their footing, the duo stepped up to serve as key thought partners for leaders navigating complex environments.
Moving Past the Transactional to Address the Adaptive
While many corporate coaches focus strictly on the technical, structural aspects of business management, Dr. Ervin emphasized that true leadership support requires looking at the "full self—mentally, physically, and emotionally." This adaptive piece is especially important for those working in social services and crisis management, where the emotional toll can be staggering, she explained.
Dr. Ervin noted that the constant pressure to solve every problem quickly leads to a dangerous bottleneck.
"Decision fatigue is real for a lot of leaders, and most people don't realize that their inability to make a decision is preventing them from getting their org or their business to the next level,” she said.
She added that the current cultural obsession with constant urgency forces leaders into an unsustainable pattern.
"People feel like they have to do it all... They feel like they're the only one that can do it, so they've got to be there. And the reality is you don't. The reality is, if we continue to work ourselves in that way, we will burn ourselves out and we will make decisions that are poor and reckless,” she said.
To combat this, the Ervin Consulting Group implements prioritized planning and "scenario mapping," giving leaders three fluid paths forward rather than a rigid, linear trajectory.
Curating a Space to "Just Be"
This philosophy of stepping back to move forward is the driving force behind their upcoming event, The Release Experience. Designed specifically for high-capacity individuals who carry "unseen sacrifices," the event is structured as a temporary reprieve from the pressure of keeping up appearances.
“The Release Experience is a space for high-capacity individuals who need a place to just be, who are surrounded by people who get it,” Ervin said. “We are not solving anyone's problems in this day-and-a-half experience. But the idea is to create new normal spaces for us to feel like we are seen, understood, and valued for all of our complexities and contributions."
Attendees can expect to walk away with practical, micro-daily habits, such as intentional breath work and setting vocal boundaries with family, designed to reset an overstimulated nervous system. Beyond the tools, the event promises deep community building, pampering, and celebration.
