A Northwest Icon Honored: Portland Proclaims November 30 as ‘DJ O.G. ONE Day’
In a historic ceremony at City Hall last month, the city of Portland officially proclaimed November 30th as "DJ OG One Day," honoring local legend David Jackson, known professionally as DJ O.G. ONE.
This recognition marks a significant milestone, as Jackson is the first DJ in the city's history to receive such an honor. The proclamation culminates 33 years of leadership and unwavering dedication to the Pacific Northwest community.
Jackson dedicated his career to service, beginning at age 13 when he received his first award from the mayor of Los Angeles. For the last 19 seasons, he has served as the official DJ for the Portland Trail Blazers, becoming the sonic architect of the Moda Center. In this role, he curates the city's energy, successfully bridging the gap between professional sports and local hip-hop culture.
“DJ OG One Day is bigger than just recognizing me, but it really is about recognizing what I stand for: putting people over profit, encouraging people to live life with purpose and intention,” he said.
Jackson’s resilience was tested in 2017 when he faced a life-threatening battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. After triumphing over the adversity, he emerged with a new framework for life and leadership: B.E. F.L.U.I.D., standing for Bold and Engaging, having Faith and Love, maintaining Unwavering values, acting with Intention, and being Determined about one's legacy. This philosophy serves as the foundation for his "Leadertainment" platform, which coaches the next generation on leading with purpose.
Jackson’s vision is visibly realized through his role as co-founder of PDX Hip Hop Week. Through this initiative, he works to ensure that Black culture is respected and celebrated within the halls of government and boardrooms, while empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs and creatives. His selflessness as a bridge builder was instrumental in supporting Black-owned media organizations, including Converge Media, when they first expanded into the Rose City six years ago.
As Portland looks forward to celebrating this day annually, the proclamation honors a man who dedicated his life to serving his community and building a lasting legacy of excellence.
"I thank God that he gave me the tool of music to connect with people,” Jackson said.
This story exemplifies Converge Media’s dedication to sharing impactful stories from Portland’s Black community.
