Why is There a Vacancy on the Seattle City Council?
Councilmember Cathy Moore (District 5) resigned her seat on the Seattle City Council, effective July 7, 2025.
The application window is officially open for interested candidates residing in District 5 (North Seattle) to apply for the vacant City Council position. This is a crucial opportunity for community members to step up and serve their district.
Key Application Details:
Deadline: Completed applications must be received by the City Clerk by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Submission: Applications can be submitted via email to councilvacancy@seattle.gov or in person at Seattle City Hall, City Clerk's Office, Floor 3.

Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible, applicants must be:
A U.S. citizen
A qualified voter of the State of Washington
Able to read and write English
A registered voter of District 5 for at least 120 days prior to and including the filing date.

Beyond applying, community groups have two ways to get involved in this important process:
Provide Feedback: Share your general feedback on the public forum structure, questions for candidates, or accessibility considerations by completing the form on the City Clerk's Council Vacancy webpage.
Host a Public Forum: Organizations interested in potentially hosting the public forum where candidates will be publicly interviewed should email a letter of interest describing their capacity and relevant experience to councilvacancy@seattle.gov by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
What's Next?
A public forum to hear from the candidates is tentatively scheduled for July 21, 2025.
A Special City Council meeting for councilmembers to vote on applicants is scheduled for July 28, 2025. A successful candidate will be appointed with a simple majority of at least five votes.
