Artist Jonarra Swanson Unveils Profound Solo Show 'Paintbrush Legacy' in Pioneer Square
Artist, entrepreneur, and mother Jonarra Swanson recently unveiled her first solo exhibition in years, titled "Paintbrush Legacy," at Gallery AXIS in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. This collection features a series of never-before-seen pieces that delve into themes of self-determination, resilience, and the power of creating one’s own destiny.
Converge creative director Erik Kalligraphy took his camera to the gallery and masterfully documented the new collection of Swanson’s never-before-seen pieces.
The Symbolism of the Paintbrush
For Swanson, "Paintbrush Legacy" is a metaphor for taking control of one’s life. In her work, characters are often depicted navigating canvases while holding paintbrushes or buckets of paint, symbolizing their inherent ability to create their own paths. These figures are guided by the wisdom of ancestral leaders, with many pieces incorporating quotes from figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and Langston Hughes.
Swanson views this work as part of a continuous journey—a "marathon" inspired by the words of Nipsey Hussle—where each generation passes a baton of greatness to the next.
A Journey from Adversity to Creation
Swanson recalled a period of intense depression after losing her job and dropping out of college. During this time, she felt she was "destined for nothing," a feeling reinforced by those around her. She began painting as an escape, a choice that eventually transformed her life.
"I always say that I feel like when I had nothing, God gave me a paintbrush and my life started over,” she said. “And I do feel like my life started over as soon as I started creating because I wasn't only creating paintings, but I was creating a new story in my life."
Impact and Legacy
Beyond personal empowerment, Swanson emphasizes the importance of representation. She believes that without the stories of marginalized communities, the world misses out on the "magic" of billions of people. Her goal is for visitors to leave the gallery feeling connected, empowered, and certain that there is light on the other side of darkness.
"How we live our life becomes a blueprint for other people,” she said. “We need to be conscious about the actions that we're making and how we're inspiring people around us.”
“Paintbrush Legacy” will be showing at Gallery AXIS through April 7, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Pioneer Square at 308 1st Ave S, Seattle.
