At Our Table: My Afternoon with Lewis Rudd at Colman Commons

Some afternoons remind me exactly why we opened the doors to Colman Commons.
Recently, Lewis Rudd, co-founder and CEO of Ezell’s Famous Chicken, joined host Keisha Credit here for an exclusive interview on The Pop-Up! at the Colman Commons Backstage. He arrived with his team, and we welcomed our Converge Media family and partners to be part of the live audience. Together, we listened to a community icon whose work has been woven into Seattle’s story for more than four decades.

There is something special about hearing a longtime entrepreneur speak in a room full of people who know what it means to build, support, and believe in a vision. Sitting together for the taping gave us space to receive Lewis’s perspective and reflect on the commitment it takes to grow a business while staying connected to its community.
When the cameras stopped, the afternoon kept unfolding. Lewis had brought food for everyone, and we gathered around the table I had set in our dining area. Our teams and friends sat down together, passed plates, shared stories, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of being in one another’s company. Some had known Lewis well for years, while others were getting to spend time with him in a new way.
One of my favorite moments was quieter. Just between me and him, Lewis walked me through the food, told me which dishes were his favorites, and fixed me a plate with some of the things he loves most from the Ezell’s menu. It was such a generous, personal gesture. We laughed and talked, then had the chance to walk him through the gallery. I loved seeing him experience the space, just as I loved watching everyone else linger with the art and with each other.
I left that day with a full heart. We came together for an interview, and we also made room for a shared meal, good conversation, and joy. At Colman Commons, I hope people always feel welcome to pull up a chair, take in the art, and stay awhile. That afternoon with Lewis, Keisha, and our community felt like that hope came to life.
