Beyond the Ninth Inning: Celebrating Legacy at Steelheads Alley

If you’ve ever walked past the corner of Dave Niehaus Way and Royal Brougham in the SODO District of Seattle, you’ve felt the energy radiating from Steelheads Alley. It’s a space designed in the spirit of Black exceptionalism.
The Steelheads Sunday Experience
This Sunday, April 19th, the Seattle Mariners take on the Texas Rangers for Steelheads Sunday. Throughout the season, there is something deeply moving about seeing the Mariners take the field in iconic 1946 throwback jerseys every Sunday home game.
The "S" on the cap represents a legacy of Black resilience. For decades, the history of Black baseball in the Pacific Northwest was relegated to a mere footnote. Today, Steelheads Alley ensures that legends like Herb Simpson are spoken of with the same reverence as superstars like Ken Griffey Jr. or Ichiro.
A Legacy Continued: Ownership and Art
Steelheads Alley is a proud Black-owned business and a key part of the Métier Brewing Company portfolio. The establishment is named in honor of the 1946 Seattle Steelheads, the city’s impactful Negro Leagues baseball team.
When you step inside, you are immersed in a curated history:
Original Murals: Works by Damon Brown tell the story of the West Coast Baseball Association.
Historic Curation: The walls feature images and artifacts curated by the Black Heritage Society of Washington State.
Honoring a Timeless Tradition
The transition from the stadium to the Alley is where the community truly bonds. In the era of the Negro Leagues, the game didn't end at the ballpark. It was a common tradition for players and fans to leave the stadium and gather at local, community-owned establishments to celebrate, talk strategy, and find sanctuary.
By joining the after-party, you are participating in that same movement—keeping the celebration going long after the final out is recorded. It’s a chance to connect with the community at its core while enjoying Métier Brewing Company brews and delicious burgers.
Join The Movement
Don’t head straight for the light rail or the parking garage after the game. Cross the street and join us for a sea of throwback jerseys and good company.
