The Garfield High School girls' basketball program is facing an uncertain future following the unexpected firing of head coach Roy Smiley. Smiley's removal last week, which comes just before the start of the season, has put the program at a major crossroads. Garfield’s boys' basketball coach and NBA legend, Brandon Roy, was also fired.

In the Hood Classic Finale, Rainier Beach looked to extend their winning streak to 11 games and Garfield looked to tie the season series a 1-1, hand the Vikings their first Metro League loss and continue their winning streak to five games.

With the walls sweating, bleachers filled on both sides both Garfield and Rainier Beach put on a show for those in person as this was the last ‘Hood Classic’ to be played in this gym as the school is set to be remodeled. Rainier Beach’s Kaden Powers, Jaylen Petty, and Keaundre Morris led the way for a Vikings victory.

Garfield Bulldogs and Rainier Beach Vikings face off tonight in the “Hood Classic”, the Vikings 8-2 look to win the first matchup of two against Garfield, and the Bulldogs currently on a five-game winning streak look to extend that against the Vikings on their home floor. The game will take place on the Crawford Court home of Rainier Beach at 8:30pm.

Former Garfield Bulldog Star, Legend Smiley has taken his talents to Branson, Missouri after cementing himself locally and nationally.

Entering his final high school season, Foster High School’s Jeremiah White, one of the top prospects in Washington state, is looking to take the Bulldogs to new heights. For those who are unaware, White began his high school career at basketball powerhouse Rainier Beach. Now, with a fresh start, he aims for more than just putting up points, getting stops defensively, and winning games.
