Celebrating Women in Film: Scope Screenings Hosts Queen of the Screen
Scope Screenings hosted Queen of the Screen, the September edition of the underground film festival, and a dynamic event celebrating women in film. The fourth episode of the fourth season took place at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute in the Central District, a venue packed with historical and cultural significance for Seattle’s Black community.
The monthly festival (June - December) not only featured inspiring storytelling and artistic expression from local women but also brought together Scope Screening’s laid-back and supportive atmosphere, dedicated to celebrating artists and their successes above all else. Among the featured creatives was Converge Media’s Head of Production, Alaia D’Alessandro.
Livt, one of the screening’s featured directors, expressed her appreciation for Scope Screenings' unique atmosphere. “I think my favorite thing about Scope Screenings is that I can guarantee that this is my audience,” she said, highlighting the impact of the platform for Black women filmmakers. "I think the biggest thing it does for me is just creating awareness... how Black women filmmakers are at the forefront."
Featured director Talia Green uplifted the founder and commissioner of Scope Screenings Lex Scope, for highlighting local artists with pride and unabashed acceptance. "I think accessibility is the biggest thing,” she said. ‘These festivals allow a really accessible entry point for filmmakers to be able to showcase their work."
Another featured director, Tunrayo, shared her thoughts on Queen of the Screen. "As a Black woman, putting my film in festivals sounds jarring already. And having a space that's specific for that for women of color, especially hosted by a Black individual, that it just feels so much more welcoming,” she said.
John Gauntt, Creative Director of the Seattle AI Film Festival, described the gathering in a few powerful words: "Seattle Unplugged, raw, great films that are…showing how people want to feel about the things that really drive us because that is the magic."
The event successfully showcased the talent and dedication of women in film, fostering a sense of community and inspiration within the Seattle film scene.
