It’s that time of year again! The sun is starting to peek through the Seattle clouds, the cherry blossoms are hitting their peak, and the energy in the Central District is shifting toward something truly special. We are officially in the countdown to a cultural anchor in the Pacific Northwest: The Seattle Black Film Festival (SBFF).
From April 30th to May 3rd, the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute (LHPAI) is going to be the epicenter of Black storytelling, creativity, and community. If you’ve been before, you know the vibe. If you haven’t, prepare to have your soul fed and your perspective shifted.
A Movie Marathon and Movement
For those who need a refresher, the SBFF is about reclaiming the narrative of the Northwest Black community. Hosted by our folks at LANGSTON, this festival has been a vessel for Black brilliance for decades.
The mission has always been clear: to provide a platform for independent films by and about the Black diaspora that you won’t find in the big-box multiplexes. We’re talking about stories from the Central District to the Caribbean, from South Seattle to South Africa. It’s a space where activism meets art, and where our history is honored while our future is imagined.
2026 Theme: ‘The Sound Of Us’
This year, the festival is leaning into the rhythm. The 2026 theme, "The Sound Of Us" is a tribute to the music, the spoken word, and the auditory heartbeat that has carried Black people through every trial and triumph.
Seattle has always been a city of sound, from the jazz legacy of Jackson Street to the hip-hop pioneers holding it down today. SBFF 2026 is celebrating how that sound translates to cinema. Whether it’s the pulse of a documentary or the lyrical flow of a narrative short, this year’s lineup is designed to be heard as much as it is seen.
Why We Show Up
At Converge Media, we always say that if we don’t tell our stories, nobody will. The Seattle Black Film Festival is the ultimate expression of that truth. It’s where local filmmakers get to rub shoulders with international directors. It’s where the elders sit next to the youth and discuss what it means to be Black in the 21st century.
This isn’t just "content"—this is our legacy.
