Darren Drone Talks Seattle Opera’s ‘Carmen’ and Historically Relevant Power Dynamics

Opera singer Darren Drone recently joined host Trae Holiday on “The Day With Trae” to discuss his history as a singer, his current role in Seattle Opera’s Carmen, and the show’s harrowing relevance in modern society.

Drone’s journey to the international opera stage began in a bathroom in Arkansas. Growing up in the South, Drone found he had a natural gift for mimicry, echoing the sounds of R&B and soul legends like Donell Jones and Barry White before he even reached middle school.

While his sisters were involved in choir and drama, Drone initially pursued instrumental music, playing the euphonium in middle and high school. However, a sudden casting as Daddy Warbucks in a high school production of Annie shifted his trajectory.

Today, Drone has returned to Seattle Opera for Carmen. Reflecting on the company, he noted the welcoming environment that contrasts with the high-pressure atmosphere often found in the industry. "It's always just felt so inviting," Drone said. “It just feels like a warm hug every time I'm here.”

In the current production, set in 1950s Havana, Drone portrays the character Zuniga. He viewed the role and the opera itself as a vehicle to explore enduring social tensions. "I always want the audience to understand the different power dynamics between women and men at that time that still, of course, exist today," he said.

As he prepares to take the stage alongside local opera favorite J'Nai Bridges, Drone remained awed by the physical power of the unamplified voice—a tool capable of sailing over a forty-piece orchestra.

"It's mind-blowing that that's even possible, that a human body can do that," he said. "There's nothing like it.”

Seattle Opera’s Carmen opens Saturday, May 2nd and runs through May 17th at Seattle Center’s McCaw Hall. Get your tickets at seattleopera.org.
