Gifted Gab Pulls Up to The Pop-Up! for a Night of Bars, Beats and Black Excellence
If you didn’t catch artist Gifted Gab on The Pop-Up!, now’s your chance to circle back, because host The Big O laid out the red carpet. As Seattle’s premier hip-hop pioneer, Gab pulled up for an expansive conversation on all things music, culture, and hustle.
If you know anything about the town’s cultural landscape, you know Gab’s footprint is heavy. From receiving high-profile co-signs from legends like Method Man to crafting the official intro song for the Seattle Storm, her legacy is undeniable. But as the cameras rolled, she reminded us all why she isn't just a force on the mic, but a multi-hyphenate powerhouse making boss moves behind the scenes.
On Wearing Many Hats and Navigating the Music Industry
Gifted Gab made it clear that surviving and thriving as a creative means diversifying your hustle. When asked to describe exactly who she is today, she laid it out plainly.
"I would say I'm just hella multifaceted. Recording artist, producer, consultant, songwriter, dot connector...I wear many hats” she said.
Breaking down the realities of the modern music landscape, she cut through the social media noise to give viewers the truth about streaming economics.
"No successful person is just a rapper,” she said. “We are not making that much money off of music. The ones that are fronting like they are buying mansions off of streams, it is not happening. It's like Drake and Beyoncé and that's it."
Instead of chasing empty streams, Gab has pivoted heavily into the world of sync music—writing and placing tracks for television hit shows like Insecure, movie soundtracks like Sorry to Bother You and Freaky Tales, and commercial ads.
‘The Biggest Little City’: The Northwest Hip-Hop Vibe
Reflecting on her roots and her time spent splitting days between Seattle and Southern California, Gab spoke on what continues to make the Pacific Northwest hip-hop community a distinct and sacred ecosystem.
"Seattle is like the biggest little city. We’re a big city, but I feel like it's hella small town vibes in the sense that we all know each other, especially within the Black community,” she said.
She noted how post-COVID socioeconomic shifts have altered venue landscapes and local booking access, but praised the longevity of the town's identity.
"Over the years, Seattle's definitely made a name for itself,” she said. “But not anybody outside of Seattle even knew what Seattle rap was. But now I feel like we have enough artists and enough data and product to put it together."
A Legacy of Integrity
When pressed on how she leaves an impact on the community, Gab’s answer was profound yet simple.
"Treat the janitor the same way that you treat the CEO. There should be no difference,” she said. “Meet people where they're at and just be a good person.”
What’s Next on the Radar?
Gifted Gab isn't slowing down. She’s performing at Fremont Friday on August 28th, and Converge’s own Deaunte Damper will be hosting.
But perhaps the biggest mic-drop of the night was the reminder that she has officially entered the cannabis industry with her own curated artist collection in collaboration with ZOZ Cannabis, featuring indica, sativa, and hybrid strains. You can already find her product sitting on the shelves at major dispensaries, including The Bakeréé and Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis.
"If you need that Gifted Gab in your store, go down to your local dispensary, kick in the door, slap the budtender, and tell them, 'Why don't you have Gifted Gab's weed in your store?' she said. “I'm joking. Don't do that. But nicely, let them know.”
