Hinton Publishing recently announced the release of The Power of the River, a memoir by Ed Taylor, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Washington. The book will be available on April 21, 2026 and offers a reflection on mentorship, identity, resilience, and the forces that shape a life.
Serving as a professor in the College of Education, Taylor’s professional focus centers on leadership, ethics, and equity. His memoir provides a lived example of how mentorship, community, and reflection can open pathways forward for those grappling with questions of identity, isolation, and purpose.
In The Power of the River, Taylor recounts his journey from a childhood of loss in Lompoc, California, to his career as an educator, scholar, and leader. According to a recent press release, the narrative is grounded in community and pivotal relationships, sustained by a search for meaning. Taylor covers moments from navigating the pressures placed on young Black men in collegiate athletics at Gonzaga University to finding purpose in higher education.
The book's central question is, "What carries us forward?" For Taylor, the answer is the people, places, and moments that shape individuals, often quietly and unexpectedly. He reflects on the steady presence of a devoted mother and mentors who intervened at critical junctures, which helped him resist becoming "a cog in the machine" and instead chart a life rooted in purpose.
