Homestead Community Land Trust Fundraiser To Feature Stacey Abrams This Weekend

In a recent interview with guest host of "The Day with Trae” Alicia Crank, Cherryl Jackson, President of the Board of Delegates for Homestead Community Land Trust (HCLT) shared details about the organization's upcoming annual fundraiser this Saturday featuring Representative Stacey Abrams, and dove into the impacts and importance of community land trusts.

The annual fundraiser, scheduled for Saturday, September 27, will feature former Georgia state representative Stacey Abrams. Jackson gave insight on the choice of speaker. "We love for our organization to be a sponsor of inspiration, of thought partnership, of activism,” she said. “And we do that by bringing in guests that really inspire that.”

Jackson explained the core concept of a community land trust, acknowledging the Black activists and farmers and community leaders in Georgia that saw a need for community to make homeownership accessible. Connecting the concept to her own organization, she explained that HCLT takes land and holds that land as a community asset. “What you find is that that normal home that usually would have been $600,000, mid $500s, is now anywhere from $281,000 to $321,000," she said, contributing to a legacy of home ownership.

Jackson addressed common misconceptions about home ownership, particularly the belief that it's unaffordable. "Right now, the mortgage for a home is sometimes less than it is for what it is for rent in an apartment," she pointed out. Challenging viewers to consider the financial benefits of homeownership, she explained that renters are often paying $2,800 a month for an apartment, while a mortgage could be significantly less when partnered with HCLT.

To help address the fear associated with home buying, HCLT has offered coaching sessions to educate the community through the process. Jackson described these classes as a cohort learning together, but also learning from and motivating each other through the anxiety associated with buying a home.

In her closing remarks, Jackson extended an invitation to the fundraiser. "Stacey Abrams is here not because we want her to talk about Homestead. We want her to talk about us,” she said. “How do we move as a community when we want to center our voices, our choices, and think about equity? And how does that look when it comes to home ownership? And we want you to have a seat at that table."
