Honoring a Legacy: The Rededication of Powell S. Barnett's Portrait

On April 27, 2024, a heartfelt gathering took place at Leschi in Seattle, where more than 20 family descendants of Powell S. Barnett, along with school officials and community members, gathered to rededicate his portrait. This event not only honored Barnett's remarkable life but also highlighted his enduring impact on the community.

Powell S. Barnett, a prominent figure in Seattle's history, was celebrated through tributes from family members and community leaders who knew and admired him. The program poignantly reflected on Barnett's life and his numerous achievements, which continue to resonate to this day.

Among the highlights of the event was the moment multigenerational descendants of Powell S. Barnett posed with his rededicated portrait, now prominently displayed at Leschi. This symbolic gesture underscored the deep connection the family maintains with Barnett's legacy and his contributions to the community.

The program commenced with a warm welcome from Genevieve Ramsey, Principal of Leschi Elementary School, setting a tone of reverence and appreciation for Barnett's legacy. Derrick Jones then offered an opening prayer, invoking a sense of reflection as the event unfolded.

Karen Jones, granddaughter of Powell S. Barnett, provided a compelling overview of Barnett's life and accomplishments, offering attendees a glimpse into the remarkable journey and legacy he’s left in Seattle. Eric Barnett, Powell S. Barnett's grandson, shared personal reminiscences about his grandfather and read excerpts from his writings, providing valuable insights into Barnett's character and vision.
