Marques Williams: Inspiring the Next Generation of Black Aviators
In a recent interview on “The Day With Trae,” instrument rated private pilot Marques Williams shared his inspiring journey as a Black man aviation and the strength, leading a conversation on the importance of representation and perseverance.
Born and raised in Seattle, Williams initially didn't envision a future in aviation. "I didn't want to just grow up to be a pilot when I was young. Didn't even know that being a pilot was attainable," he stated. His journey into aviation was solidified after seeing pilots who looked like him while working as a customer service operator for an airline. "Representation is so important," he said.
A pivotal moment in Williams’ career was attending a pilot conference hosted by the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) in Phoenix, Arizona, after Covid. "When I walked into the major ballroom that they were having and seen nothing but Black pilots, Black women, Black men... that was the moment where I was like, I definitely know that I can do this,” he said.
Williams is actively involved in giving back through OBAP's Ace Academy, a week-long program for kids aged 13 to 18. This program introduces youth to various aspects of aviation, from visiting the Boeing plant to flying with a certified instructor. Williams, still on his own journey to becoming an airline pilot, finds it rewarding to speak to young people because they are all on similar journeys toward individual goals together.
For those considering a career in aviation, Williams offered succinct advice: never give up, be consistent, and be determined. He also encouraged people of all ages to pursue a career in aviation, noting that he started his pilot journey at 32.
Reflecting on his legacy, Williams hopes to continue to inspire young people in achieving their dreams. "I just want people to see me as a genuine person in all facets of life... If I'm lending a hand to help you out, it's not because I think somebody's looking or I think that I can gain something from it."
Williams encouraged anyone interested in aviation, whether as a pilot, mechanic, air traffic controller, or flight attendant,to reach out with questions mister.williams206@gmail.com
