More Than a Cut: J Styles Barber Shop's 25 Years as a South Seattle Community Hub

J Styles Barber Shop, located at 3847 Rainer Avenue in South Seattle, Washington, is celebrating 25 years of business. Owner and barber Jameel Shabazz, who has been cutting hair for closer to 30 years, has been leaving the South Seattle community looking fresh and fabulous for decades, largely attributed to what he brings beyond a haircut.
For Shabazz, a barbershop serves as much more than a place for haircuts; it is a community hub. He is actively transitioning the space into a community center, operating a non-profit and hosting events that benefit the community as a whole. The goal is to restore the old traditional barbershop vibes, making it a central point for information on various topics, including finances and mayor’s counseling. Whether it’s operating his nonprofit or hosting events like the safe space for Black men to discuss mental health on January 21st, Jameel is dedicated to the holistic well-being of his neighbors.

"Once the service industry goes, then it’s going to be commercialized," Jameel warns. "Keep supporting community-based businesses, because once they go, it’s hard to get them back". Come for the expert fade, stay for the wisdom, and support a legacy that is truly "South End Made."
J Styles Barbershop’s hours are as follows:
Mondays: 9 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Tuesdays: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Wednesdays: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Thursdays: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Fridays: 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturdays: 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sundays: Closed
