The second annual On the Block Holiday Special creative marketplace recently brought together a community of local artists, vendors, and creatives for a weekend of celebration and fundraising in Seattle. Held at the Quality Flea Center, the event was a coming-together and a vital effort to raise funds for the organization’s year-round programming.
On the Block co-founder Julie Chang Schulman described the core mission of the event as "building a hyperlocal creative ecosystem." She explained that the organization is creating more opportunities for collaboration, investing in community, and non-capital exchange.
"We are 365 days a year on the block doing the work, building creative spaces, holding it down and supporting local artists,” she said.
The marketplace was a hub of activity, featuring approximately 50 to 60 vendors selling everything from curated vintage, upcycled goods, and street wear to local art and jewelry. Attendees could also enjoy a coloring station, soul food, and music from DJ Razberry Beretta.
Recording artist Lady P brought the energy to the event, and emphasized the importance of supporting local commerce.
"It's important to buy local and then it's very important to bring the community together," she said.
Lady P, who creates soul music for "people that have really been through some stuff," also spoke about the power of her music to connect a blended audience. "I feel like I have that energy to kind of pull everybody together,” she said.
Co-founder of On the Block and owner of Throwbacks Northwest Rio Estolas highlighted the event's role in providing a platform for creativity. He noted that On the Block strives to create a launch pad for local artists above all else.
Ultimately, the festive marketplace was about more than just transactions but a chance to celebrate the opening of On the Block's new physical space Eleven : Eleven in Seattle’s Capitol Hill.
