Paul Sanders is Going National on Back2Besa FOX SOUL

This week, Back2Besa on FOX SOUL is hosted by our very own producer, Paul Sanders! Paul, also the Creative Director for Northwest Credible Messenger, a proud husband, and a devoted dad, brings his passion for building community through storytelling to the forefront. He's not just presenting these narratives; he's personally produced many of them, offering an intimate look at the powerful initiatives shaping the Pacific Northwest.

Get ready for an episode packed with compelling stories, starting with the vital work of Northwest Credible Messenger. You'll learn about their groundbreaking Barber and Beautician behavioral health project, an innovative program funded by the Community Reinvestment Project and the Washington State Department of Commerce. This initiative trains barbers, beauticians, and other trusted community figures as certified Peer Counselors, transforming salons into safe spaces for mental health support and breaking down stigma. We'll explore how this program is creating a ripple effect of healing and hope across Washington State, building sustainable infrastructure for long-term well-being.

Next, we head to Tacoma to catch up with former NFL star Desmond Trufant and the Innovative Change Makers. We'll revisit their impactful "Social Emotional Learning and Youth Sports: Learn from the Pros" event at Trufant's Sunset Estates. This powerful panel and fundraiser featured sports legends like Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Joyce Walker, and the Trufant brothers, who shared their personal journeys of struggle and resilience. The aim is to empower young individuals to become not just successful athletes, but positive and productive citizens, showing them they're not alone and that their challenges can be stepping stones.

Our mission to uplift youth continues as we spotlight Fathers and Sons Together (FAST). We'll take you to their "Next Generation Level Up Celebration," a testament to their partnership with AVELA (A Vision for Engineering Literacy and Access). Witness youth from the Seattle area completing Phase One of a year-long career readiness program, showcasing their skills in resume writing, public speaking, and STEM-focused projects like lighting design and keypad coding. This celebration is about building confidence, fostering community, and opening doors for Black and Brown youth in STEM and leadership, with FAST's new resource and outreach center, FAST R.O.C., further amplifying their momentum.

Then, we journey to Capitol Hill for "Hands That Braid," a segment celebrating the art and cultural significance of braiding. Following that, Paul takes us to Tacoma for a high-energy Akim Ali concert. Produced by Innovative Change Makers, this event wasn't just about music; it was a community gathering that brought 400 people together, breaking stigmas and providing a safe, enjoyable experience while highlighting local talent.

We'll then link up with Besa at ETC Tacoma clothing. You'll get an inside look at a FOX 13 Seattle pop-up event where free scoops of Besa's vegan cookies and cream ice cream (her collaboration with Molly Moon for Women's History Month) were given away. While Besa was busy scooping, Paul connected with Umi Wagner and the team about their spring collection, showcasing the vibrant fashion scene.

Our culinary journey takes us to the Southend for a taste of Island Soul. Discover the inspiring story of Theo Martin, whose restaurant embodies a legacy of love, family, and community. From his father's barbecue to his mother's nurturing kitchen, Theo's passion for food and his dedication to serving the Columbia City neighborhood shine through. With support from the Seattle Office of Economic Development, Island Soul has become a beloved institution, offering authentic Caribbean flavors and a warm, family-oriented atmosphere.

Finally, we head to Portland for the dazzling Bloom Runway Dynasty fashion show at the Melody Ballroom, as part of our Northwest Connect segment. Witness how Bloom Agency founder Abibat Durosimi is igniting the fashion scene after a five-year hiatus, putting the "503" on the fashion map. This re-emerging annual event aims to collaborate with Black and Brown schools in Portland next year, opening doors for aspiring designers.

This episode culminates in a celebration of Black Joy and a powerful affirmation from Paul Sanders: "The power of a story lies not just in what’s told, but in how it’s felt." Tune in for an inspiring hour of connection, resilience, and community building across the Pacific Northwest!
