The waterfront was buzzing last week, and if you weren’t there, you missed a historic shift in our city’s cultural landscape. When Colman Commons officially threw open its doors, it transformed the historic Colman Building into a sanctuary for Black creativity, connection, and unfiltered joy.
With Executive Director Ashleigh McCurdy at the helm, the atmosphere was electric—filled with the kind of community and togetherness that we talk about, dream about, and now, have a home for.
From the curated exhibition of Black artists to the soulful performances and conversations that anchored the Art Walk Afterglow, the Grand Opening was a declaration of presence. Let’s be clear: Colman Commons is designed to foster a legacy. By creating a dedicated home where underrepresented voices aren't just heard, but prioritized and celebrated, the team has crafted a space where community, healing, and art can finally breathe and thrive together.
The Commons has officially arrived, and it’s ready to serve as the new bedrock for Black brilliance in the Pacific Northwest for years to come.
