Portland’s Silicon Forest: Bridging Innovation and Community, Empowering the Next Generation

The third annual Silicon Forest Tech Summit convened in Portland, Oregon in March at the Oregon Convention Center, marking another year of bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology and community engagement. This Black-led summit was a pivotal gathering for experts and community members to explore the rapid evolution of the digital landscape.

The event focused heavily on demystifying artificial intelligence and how to use it while fostering a cross-sector and cross-generational environment. Attendees ranged from robotics and drone technology specialists to educators and economic development agents.

For many, the summit was an essential platform for professional and community growth.

"We want to see Black engineers, we want to see Black designers, and we want to see Black youth being incorporated into it,” Lakayana Yotoma Drury, Executive Director of Word Is Bond, said.

Trent Aldridge, CEO of Self Enhancement, Inc. emphasized the practical benefits for local organizations, explaining that the summit focused on identifying current tech trends and how to leverage them to serve the Portland community more effectively.

A core theme of the summit was preparing youth for an increasingly digital future. Programs like Day One Racing utilized physics and technology through racing simulations and radio-controlled devices to engage children.

Beyond innovation, the summit explored how technology can foster accessibility. Discussions touched on how AI-assisted systems can help underrepresented groups by making complex processes more accessible.
