PREVIEW This Week’s Episode of Back2Besa: Food With Melanin and Statewide Artistic Excellence

Back2Besa is back with a week of good eats, grand openings, and immense creativity from both sides of Washington State. Artists from across the inland Northwest gathered in Spokane for Terrain’s 16th Annual Flagship Event, while Deaunte Damper set the vibes right at Inside’s recent open mic night uplifting underrepresented voices. In addition, Chef Trey Lamont kicked off his new series Food With Melanin at Fat’s Chicken and Waffles, putting the history and passion behind the kitchen on full display. 

An Explosion of Creativity at Terrain 16

First up, Besa took her annual road trip to Spokane, Washington to take in the creative mecca that is Terrain’s 16th Annual Flagship Event. Featuring puppeteer Dennis McNett, also known as Wolfbat, hip-hop trio Truehoods, and poet laureate of Spokane Mery Smith, Terrain packed a three-story warehouse with artistic excellence across the inland Northwest. 

The Sanctuary of A Space Inside’s Open Mic

Next up, A Space Inside recently hosted a transformative open mic night, hosted by Deaunte Damper, that brought together courageous artistic voices across the city. While Inside recently closed the doors of its brick-and-mortar, its spirit stays alive through the safety, support, and expression of Seattle’s underrepresented voices on the mic.  

Wally’s Northwest Soul Celebrates its Grand Opening

Keeping it close to home, the community celebrated the grand opening of Wally’s Northwest Soul in Seattle’s historical Central District with Chef Wally himself. The weight of Wally’s grand opening was especially significant, moving into the former location of Jackson’s Catfish Corner on 23rd and Jackson. Now, Wally’s bringing in his classic soul food flavors with a Pacific Northwest twist. 

Chef Trey Lamont Kicks Off His New Series Food With Melanin

Staying in the Central District, Chef Trey Lamont kicked off his new series Food With Melanin with Chef Erika White of Fat’s Chicken and Waffles. The series’ first preview showcased the two chefs diving into the history and impact of White’s Southern food staple, illuminating the stories behind local kitchens and giving them their flowers. 

The First Thursday Art Walk Takes Over Pioneer Square

Wrapping up the week, we head to Pioneer Square for the historic neighborhood’s monthly art walk which happens every first Thursday of the month. From art galleries to live music to delicious Emerald City eats, the Pioneer Square Art Walk was booming with Seattle community and culture.
