Reginald Smith Jr. on Embracing Comedy and Choreography in "The Pirates of Penzance"
Trae Holiday, host of "The Day with Trae," recently sat down with classical vocalist Reginald Smith Jr., who is starring in Seattle Opera's "The Pirates of Penzance." Smith shared insights into his musical and professional journey, and his experience with the current production at Seattle Opera with infectious enthusiasm.
Smith began by detailing his early exposure to the arts, growing up in Atlanta surrounded by music thanks to his mother’s involvement in gospel groups. Originally joining choir, he pivoted to classical vocal performance during high school when he saw the iconic operatic tragedy “Tosca,” where he was profoundly affected by the baritone, Donnie Ray Albert. "Seeing and hearing him on stage was mind-blowing and it changed everything for me,” Smith said.
Smith has had a remarkable career, performing across the world from Russia, Latvia, Spain, France, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and throughout the United States. His achievements include performing for President Barack Obama and touring with Muhammad Ali. He has also graced prestigious stages such as The Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, the Kennedy Center, and the San Francisco Lyric Opera of Chicago. To top it off, his work with the Dallas Symphony won an Emmy, and he won a Grammy for singing on the Met Opera recording of "Porgy and Bess.”
Currently, Smith is enjoying his role in "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Seattle Opera, praising the incredible cast. A highlight for him is the extensive choreography. "I like to joke and tell people that I'm a well-rounded opera singer, referring to my voluptuousness,” he said. “And with that in mind, people often think that big people don't move, but let me tell you, there's a lot of choreography in this show. And I'm having a blast dancing around the stage and acting a whole fool."
