Seattle Seahawks reveal 90s-era throwback jerseys

By Charles Hamaker

Seattle, WA – The Seattle Seahawks have finally unveiled their throwback jerseys, based on arguably the most beloved look in franchise history outside of perhaps the current, as one of the last teams in the NFL to do so this year. When it was announced a few years ago that the NFL was going to allow teams to add a throwback-themed jersey, Seattle rejoiced as many hoped that the Seahawks would do so throughout the years. It’s finally happening, and they’ve finally been unveiled today, months before they’ll be worn in the team's week 8 matchup at home against the Cleveland Browns. This sort of alternate is something that fans of the franchise located in the Pacific Northwest have clamored for for years, hoping that at some point they’d be allowed to get these jerseys into the teams rotation that already features their standard home, road, wolf grey, and action green looks. When the NFL created the rule in 2021 that allowed teams to add an alternative helmet to franchises jersey rosters, the door was then kicked open for this all to become reality, and now here we are.

The details

These throwback jerseys are nearly cut straight from the jerseys that the team wore back in the Kingdome area, with that iconic royal blue and apple green making their return to the jersey. The giant white, simple numbers make their return to the front and back of the jersey while smaller versions of that stylized number will sit on the shoulder. In a great nod to Seahawks history, each jersey will have a special commemorative patch inside the neckline. The Kingdome itself gets a nod, in a move that will surely please many of the fans that were around for the somewhat iconic stadium and the games that the team played there. The moderately simple look, that gets elevated due to the blue and green colors that tend to be so prominent here in the state of Washington and city of Seattle, makes for a jersey and overall look that older fans of the team loved when it was current and have yearned for until now. Whether it’ll be the players donning them for that week eight matchup in late October, or the ability for fans to get the jersey themselves, it’s another great way for the Seahawks to connect with the area and their fanbase as a whole.

The pants are somewhat simple as well, that grey that closely resembles the helmet (that we’ll get to here in a second) pair with a bold blue stripe flanked by green down the side that complement the stripes on the jersey. Solid blue socks round out the look to tie it all together. The helmet, the sort of opening for this jersey to even really become reality when the NFL allowed for teams to add an alternative helmet back in 2021, is back and will complete the iconic look of the jersey. Modernized to protect the heads of the players now, the silver dome and the blue facemask make their return to truly bring the Seahawks back to the 90s era.

Help overtop

The Seahawks had some assistance in making this announcement for their throwback jerseys, and considering how many fans were excitedly waiting for them, they may not have needed the help in doing so. Regardless, it’s a great way to boost fan engagement and making those same fans feel more engaged with the team itself, as free safety Quandre Diggs let fans know what to look forward to on Monday. The ballhawk and titan of twitter used his platform to further amplify the news that the team was going to unveil the jerseys at 8:32AM on Wednesday, July 19th (or just today). Seahawks fans and the NFL world have been able to have fun with Diggs on twitter as he’s announced things like Bobby Wagners deal before anybody else and is generally just a solid follow anyway.

When they’ll be worn

While they’ll surely be a fun purchase for those who are able to get their hands on the jersey, Seattle won’t break them out for an actual game until late October. Week eight of the NFL season will be an interesting time around the league, as the halfway mark of the year will approach, and the trade deadline could potentially be in play. The Seahawks host the Cleveland Browns on October 29th, a team that is hoping to be retooled after an interesting offseason and controversial not-so-great human Deshaun Watson at their quarterback position. A historic franchise themselves, the Browns are going to be in an interesting position themselves given the somewhat strong makeup of their current roster. If things go right, how they look on paper, then the teams should be both on their way to a playoff spot and this matchup should be a strong one between two opposite conference teams as the Seahawks unveil their sick throwback jerseys. What’s that saying again, look good, feel good. Feel good, play good? Anyway, if you want to buy tickets to that matchup to see these jerseys live and in person, you can click the link here to try and get yourself in Lumen Field for that game.

What’s next?

Following today’s unveiling of these beautiful throwback jerseys, the next dot on the schedule for the Seahawks is when they will begin training camp, which takes place at the end of the month of July. It’s a great way for the fans to come out and see the Seahawks in a different way as they prepare for the new season, whether that be the established veterans like DK Metcalf or a draft pick like Devon Witherspoon. Either way, once we get into training camp, it’ll surely feel like just a matter of time before we get to the regular season. In the meantime, if you want to get your hands on merchandise that is based around this throwback area of Seahawks football and get yourself geared up for the teams Week 8 matchup when they’ll be worn, click the link here for the teams official link.
