Transforming Mindsets: EL’ona Kearney and the Power of Purpose
On a recent episode of The Day With Trae, host Trae Holiday sat down with transformational architect EL’ona Kearney to discuss her groundbreaking work through her company, Mindset Reset. Kearney shared her personal journey from a childhood of depression to her current role helping others, including the formerly incarcerated, reclaim their lives through a fundamental shift in perspective.
A Journey Through Adversity
Kearney’s path was shaped by early struggles with suicidal ideation while growing up in a strict religious household. This internal battle followed her into the military, where she initially struggled with authority until a Black First Sergeant challenged her to undergo a six-month "mind transformation.” Rather than punitive measures, he assigned her research on the history and purpose of military rules, which expanded her worldview and led to four promotions in just six months, she said.
The Role of a Transformational Architect
Through Mindset Reset, Kearney works with individuals to dismantle the excuses that keep them stuck. Her approach includes:
Cultivating Character: She encourages people to see perceived negative traits in a new light. For example, "stubbornness" is reframed as being "strong-willed," a key characteristic of a leader.
Establishing Boundaries: Kearney highlights that being "triggered" often stems from a lack of boundaries. She teaches that self-care is not selfish but a necessary tool for emotional health.
Demanding Results: She pushes clients to evaluate the actual results of their current mindset and take ownership of their future.
Real-World Impact and Expansion
Evidence of Kearney’s work is also found in her own home, which she and her husband converted into a transition house for formerly incarcerated men. Her husband, who served 24 years in prison, used these mindset principles to become a journeyman welder and commercial plumber, even after facing multiple employment denials.
Mindset Reset is now scaling its impact by:
Corporate Seminars: Training companies to debunk stereotypes and successfully integrate formerly incarcerated employees.
National Replication: With a transition house that remains full, Kearney is currently exploring funding to expand the model to other cities, including Cincinnati, Ohio.
Holiday praised Kearney’s work for moving beyond theory into practical, tangible solutions that "move the needle" for the community.
