Why We Need Dr. Maxine Mimms’ Critical Conversations Now More Than Ever

Dr. Maxine Mimms was beloved by all who encountered her. The energy that she brought to a room was truly infectious in all the best ways. She made such a tremendous impact on the community in Seattle and beyond. One of her best traits was loving people right where they were.
She would often say, “People flourish when they know they’re loved.” This was something she lived by and exemplified everywhere. The beauty of being around her and experiencing how she moved has played a significant role in my life. I’m grateful I got to connect with her, spend time with her, learn from her, and be loved by her. I know there are so many other people who feel the same.
Critical Conversations was one of the spaces where she demonstrated this love for people. She would invite people into the circle to share their feelings, experiences, expertise, wisdom, concerns, angst, joys, pains, and more. This Black-only space was one of the few places where attendees knew they’d be cared for, no matter how they showed up. They’d also be checked when necessary, because with all the love she had, she still played no games with folks! She led with honesty that was wrapped in tenderness, so folks received what was being shared. Her years of life helped us all see how she used her knowledge to impart wisdom into others.

With her transition, many recognize the need to have Critical Conversations return. It may look different, but it will carry the foundation of what Dr. Mimms created. As we have these collective experiences in our communities, it’s vital that we find time to heal together, be nourished by one another, and come together to just be. I’m thankful to Elder Dawn Mason, one of the original contributors to Critical Conversations, for her blessing to bring this space back into our community.
Critical Conversations is the answer many seek. Space will be curated and previous attendees will be invited. They will share the information with others who they know need the space.
The inter-generational setting is needed, the calling is clear, and the time is now!
