World Day of Remembrance: A Call to Action for SE Seattle Street Safety
This Saturday, the Southeast Seattle community will gather to remember the lives lost and forever changed by traffic violence on local streets. The World Day of Remembrance For Road Traffic Victims is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a vital call to action for the safety and dignity of every person who walks, bikes, or drives in these neighborhoods.
The gravity of this issue is immense, particularly on two of the city's most dangerous corridors: Rainier Avenue S and MLK Jr Way S. These streets are notoriously unsafe, plagued by speeding cars, substandard sidewalks, and insufficient crosswalks. The statistics are heartbreaking: in the last 10 years, these streets have seen over 2,500 crashes resulting in injury or death. This is not just a policy problem; it is a human tragedy requiring immediate attention.
The organizers, including the Rainier Ave Committee and the MLK Transportation Justice team, invite the community to join a compassionate and powerful vigil to honor the victims and stand in solidarity with those fighting for change. Community presence at this event is a strong statement that safe streets are a fundamental right.
