All good things must come to an end. A show that we intended to last a few months to give our community curated information about COVID turned into over two years of covering some of the most important stories and issues in the Seattle area. Now 26 months later since our first Morning Update Show on March 19, 2020, our final episode will occur this week.

The Seattle Mariners fell to the Houston Astros, 2-1, in the series finale. Marco Gonzales went 7 solid innings, but ultimately the Mariners failure to add run support doomed them.

The Seattle Storm blew out the New York Liberty, 92-61, to give the team their fourth straight win.

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is opening a new funding program, Hope Corps, that connects under- and unemployed workers in the creative industries with career opportunities. The application is open now through June 6, 2022.

In memory of her daughter, Gabrielle, Hord started a nonprofit, Gabrielle’s Wings, a group that is actively removing barriers globally to the success of BIPOC youth and families. In collaboration with the YMCA of Greater Seattle, Gabrielle’s Wings is committed to helping BIPOC children and their families learn to swim and providing marginalized communities access to aquatic safety programs. The Y and Gabrielle’s Wings are motivated by the importance and value of access to aquatic safety programs like the Y’s swimming lessons.

Nikita Mathis, the owner of Platinum Plush Fashions and a pillar in Seattle’s Black business community stopped by #FeelGoodFriday with Trae Holiday to update us on how she and her business faired through the pandemic. Platinum Plush Fashions, now in its 21st year has been an example of longevity and savvy business acumen on the behalf of Mathis who has had to innovate and adapt over the years in dealing with issues of displacement of Seattle’s Black community, years-long construction in front of her business, and of course COVID. Through it all Mathis has made sure that Platinum Plush Fashions has continued to provide unique and trendy apparel for our community and beyond.

The BP Brand has rocketed into the Black Media Matters Studio last week for #FeelGoodFriday with Trae Holiday. Founder of The BP Brand, Brandon ‘BP’ Parker, and his partner, Eric George, came to spread the word that “Love is Dope.” These two launched this clothing brand with the purpose to inspire youth around the world. There is no better way to spread a movement than with shirts, hats, and a message that reinvigorates the soul.

Northwest Folklife’s 2022 Cultural Focus, Metamorphosis: In with the Old, In with the New, celebrates people’s natural propensity for change. This pandemic has proven to be one of those unique moments in our time; a turning point where we can point our compass true north, see the writing on the wall, and meet the challenges ahead.

Metamorphosis; the process of transformation. The world is changing, and so are art and culture. The 51st Northwest Folklife Festival is upon us, and this year's festival is all about change. Metamorphosis is the theme of this year's event, witness the intersection between art and culture, from May 27-30 at the Seattle Center. The time is now to become a participant in the evolution of folk and help metamorphosize what it means to be a part of the Seattle community.

About this month’s Seattle Media Mixer 🥳 I knew the event would be dope, but my little heart is truly full with joy from all of the DMs, comments that have been left, and texts about how many connections people made and how much they learned from the social media panel.

Following a year of negotiation and fundraising, the Cultural Space Agency and Rainier Avenue Radio are proud to announce their partnership, and their purchase of the historic Columbia City Theater. With support from the Strategic Investment Fund, as well as direct philanthropy from local supporters, the two organizations have acquired the Theater for $3.2 million and plan to reopen a fully renovated facility in 2023. Through the creation of the New Columbia City Theater Trust, cultural community members and neighbors will have the opportunity to be direct owners of, and investors in, the property.
