The 5th annual Seattle Black College Expo took place on Saturday, bringing high school students from around the city to meet college representatives and explore their options for higher education.

Pacific Northwest Ballet Artistic Director Peter Boal announced the promotion of six corps de ballet dancers to the rank of soloist during the opening night performance of THE SEASONS’ CANON: Madison Rayn Abeo, Dammiel Cruz-Garrido, Christopher D’Ariano, Amanda Morgan, Christian Poppe, and Leah Terada.

After two-plus years of venue closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cloudbreak Music Festival is celebrating a return to live music. The festival commenced on Thursday evening, featuring one of Seattle’s hip hop legends and pioneers, Sir Mix-A-Lot, as the opening artist.

World-renowned ballerina and current Artistic Director Virginia Johnson came to the Black Media Matters Studio to join The Day With Trae and discuss her legendary career with The Dance Theatre of Harlem and their current show, Sounds of Hazel. The show is inspired by the work of legendary Jazz musician Hazel Scott and takes place at the Paramount on November 5th.

If it seems like there’s a lot more graffiti in Seattle these days, that’s not your imagination.

According to the city, Seattle has seen an increase of more than 50% in public reports of graffiti since 2019, with 20,000 in 2021 alone.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said it’s time to do something about it.

“We have to recognize, if you live in Seattle, let’s treat it as a beautiful city. We are the Emerald City,” Harrell said. “Let’s treat it as such in our investment strategy, in our implementation, in our hearts and our minds.”

Rallying cries in support of Iran’s revolution continued on Saturday at the Westlake Center and Seattle Center. Hundreds were in attendance as community organizers and performers proclaimed their support for the women and protesters in Iran who continue to face unprecedented violence at the hands of Iran’s morality police and Islamic State.

In our second to last feature we get to check back in with my best friend, artist Breyahna Monet. Breyahna, or Breeze as she likes to be called, is new to the art scene but already making waves.

The outpouring of support for the family of D’Vonne Pickett Jr. continued on Saturday at Climate Pledge Arena. With his family present, the Kraken honored Pickett as a community hero. The team also announced that jerseys from the game will be auctioned off to support the community.

To end their homestand, the Seattle Kraken grinded out a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins thanks to a solid defensive performance.

My Seattle is hurting.

Seattle today is only 1 day in to healing from the tragic loss & murder of D'Vonne Picket Jr, a Seattle Central District native, husband, father, coach, friend, athlete, and Business Owner. Our community was struck by this news at 6:30 PM, on Wednesday.

The Seattle Kraken fell in frustrating fashion to the Vancouver Canucks, 5-4, as Seattle still cannot find a way to beat the Canucks.
