Tacoma's BIPOC Health & Wellness Fair: A One-Stop Shop for Community Well-being

Besa Gordon takes viewers to the second annual BIPOC Health & Wellness Fair at the East Side Community Center in Tacoma, produced by Abundance Health LLC. The event aimed to provide essential health and wellness services to King, Pierce, and the surrounding counties, offering a one-stop shop for attendees. Services included blood pressure checks, HIV, AIDS, and STI testing, and even free pizza. Beyond medical screenings, the fair featured vendors and panels discussing various health and wellness topics, emphasizing the importance of community support and self-care.

The fair's origins date back to 2023, when Abundance Health LLC founder Tamica Gant relocated to the east side of Tacoma and noticed a lack of medical, nutritional, educational, and financial resources in the area. Instead of complaining, they sought to be an asset to the community by organizing the event to give back on a larger scale. With over 60 vendors offering a wide range of services, attendees were encouraged to explore every table to discover resources they might not usually access. The event also aimed to make an economic change in the underserved yet diverse East Side community.

A key highlight of the fair was the panel discussion, which provided tools, resources, skills, and knowledge to promote healthier lifestyles. These discussions covered real-life issues impacting the BIPOC community, such as diabetes, HIV, mental health, maternity care, and stroke. In addition to community education, the fair supported future healthcare providers by offering up to four scholarships for BIPOC individuals majoring in health or wellness, with funds sent directly to their educational institutions. This initiative not only provides access to healthcare but also builds a pipeline of future healthcare leaders, embodying the spirit of economic development, community transformation, and "black excellence at its finest."
