Tazewell Thompson's 'Jubilee' and the Enduring Legacy of the Fisk Jubilee Singers

With the Seattle Opera’s production of “Fellow Travelers” premiering this weekend, Converge looks back at "Jubilee,” an opera that quickly captivated the city in 2024. Written and directed by the talented Tazewell Thompson, the production delved into the inspiring history of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a collective who were instrumental in preserving and popularizing Negro spirituals.

Thompson's vision for "Jubilee" stemmed from a compelling personal and professional journey, beginning with a childhood teacher's introduction to opera and culminating with a documentary about the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Feeling a powerful sense of fate, Thompson was called to share this important piece of history with the world. Under the leadership of Christina Scheppelman, the Seattle Opera fully embraced this vision, assembling a remarkable cast of singers and musicians.

More than a historical account, "Jubilee" resonated deeply with the present, tackling universal themes of resilience, cultural heritage, and the enduring power of music. Dr. G. Preston Wilson Jr., a director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, voiced his hope that the opera would inspire a new generation to connect with their roots and pursue their dreams.

“Fellow Travelers” runs through Sunday, March 1, 2026 at McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St, Seattle.  Get your tickets here, and learn more about Amber Monroe here.
