United by Hockey: Besa Gordon Visits NHL's Mobile Museum

With the hockey season in full swing, Besa Gordon visited the National Hockey League's (NHL) United by Hockey Mobile Museum during the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic Legacy event in Seattle.

This traveling, interactive museum was designed to celebrate the culture and future of the sport, with a heavy focus on the NHL’s growing diversity and inclusion efforts. Gordon’s visit centered on representation and access in sports, featuring the museum’s curator and the director of the documentary “Soul on Ice: Past, Present, Future” Kwame Mason.

Mason, whose film centers on the history and contributions of Black athletes in hockey, stressed the role of seeing oneself reflected in the sport. He explained that if young fans "see it, they can be in it," emphasizing that seeing people of color in high-level positions in hockey can inspire the next generation to follow in their footsteps. “Soul on Ice” covered the history of Black athletes in the game from the late 1800s to the present day.

Gordon’s visit to the United by Hockey Mobile Museum shows Back2Besa’s commitment to spotlighting prime examples of representation, not just in sports, but industries across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
