Zara Jo Beauty Supply Brings Representation to The Central District
Located in Seattle's Central District, Zara Jo Beauty Supply serves as a dedicated space designed to redefine the beauty shopping experience for the Black community. Founded by owner Jamal Wilson and Director of Events and Community Development Autumm Coles in 2025, the store was born out of a desire to provide a more welcoming, inclusive, and affordable alternative to mainstream retail. Named after Wilson’s daughter, the storefront prioritizes representation by ensuring that approximately 95% of its inventory comes from Black-owned and founded brands.
Beyond its curated selection of hair and skincare products, the business operates as a vital knowledge hub for historically underserved communities. Wilson and Coles emphasize that the shop is intended to be a comfortable environment where customers can feel at home and receive necessary guidance on hair care. The owners are further committed to long-term community development through initiatives such as monthly industry mixers, youth mentorship cohorts, and future plans for an in-house braid bar to support aspiring stylists.
Rooted in a deep personal history within the Central District, the store functions as more than just a retail outlet; it represents a commitment to community growth and Black excellence. By fostering an atmosphere centered on confidence and support, the founders believe that supporting the store is a way for the community to invest in itself. The store is located at 1143 Martin Luther King Jr Way and welcomes visitors throughout the week to explore its unique inventory and engage with its mission.
