An Ode to Courage and Community: PNB School Stages World Premiere of ‘Momotaro’

Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) is seizing the narrative of classic storytelling and bringing it to the stage with the premiere of Resident Choreographer Jessica Lang’s “Momotaro.” Presented by the students of the PNB School, this narrated, family-friendly ballet is an exploration of timeless themes of courage, forgiveness, and the enduring power of family and friendship.

Adapted from “Momotaro (The Peach Boy)”, one of Japan’s oldest folk tales, the production centers on a boy who bursts forth from a giant peach, fulfilling the lifelong dream of an elderly couple. His journey quickly shifts to a hero’s quest as he sets out to defeat the ogres who have stolen from his neighbors. Along the way, he forges a powerful, interspecies alliance, befriending a dog, a pheasant, and a monkey who join him in his mission to restore stolen treasures.

This beautiful presentation runs for just three performances, March 21 and 28, 2026, at Seattle Center’s McCaw Hall.

The energy continues all day long with a FREE, interactive, and family-friendly “Momotaro” Community Day on Saturday, March 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is a full celebration of Japanese and Japanese American art, dance, and culture, featuring performances, an artists’ market, collaborative art stations, and more.

In a true commitment to making art accessible to every member of the community, PNB will host a Sensory-friendly performance of “Momotaro” on Saturday, March 28 at 12:30 pm. This inclusive matinee provides a welcoming environment with modified sound, lighting, and a quiet room to ensure children and adults with sensory needs can share in the joy of live ballet.

Join the Pacific Northwest Ballet as they reflect the beauty and excellence of this captivating tale.
