Bringing the Brilliance Home: J'Nai Bridges Returns to Seattle for ‘Carmen’
Mezzo-soprano opera singer J'Nai Bridges is making a triumphant return to her hometown of Seattle for her official, fully staged operatic debut with Seattle Opera in the title role of Carmen. Having performed the role in roughly 15 productions and over 100 shows globally, Bridges reflected on her upcoming shows in the Emerald City.
"I've sung Carmen all around the world. I've sung these leading ladies all around the world, but it feels especially poignant and gratifying to come home," she said.
Bridges is acutely aware of her role in the history of opera, an art form where Black performers have not always been highly visible. She sees herself as following in the footsteps of "Black greats that have paved the way.”
For Bridges, her presence on stage is a form of representation. "I know that representation is more than half the battle," she said. "When people see themselves, they hear their stories, they want to be included.”
She explained she approaches her career with a sense of purpose and self-assurance, refusing to apologize for her identity. "I don't even walk into a room saying 'I'm Black. I have to prove myself.' For me, I am who I am, which is Black," Bridges said.
Bridges first began learning the role of Carmen at age 17 and has since seen the character evolve through her own life experiences. She described Carmen as "the strongest woman character in all of opera.”
"She comes in and she says, 'This is who I am. Don't try to change me because it's not going to work,'" she said, describing the character Carmen. While her earlier portrayals were very physical and dramatic, she now focuses on Carmen’s innate magnetism. "She walks in a room and all eyes are on her. She doesn't have to do much,” she said.
The Seattle Opera production of Carmen features Bridges on the following dates:
May 3rd (2 p.m.)
May 9th (7:30 p.m.)
May 13th (7:30 p.m.)
May 17th (2 p.m.)
