Choma Festival Brings East African Flavor and Community to Seattle’s Jimi Hendrix Park

Seattle is in for a cultural first this summer as the Choma Festival makes its debut at Jimi Hendrix Park on Saturday, June 28 from 12–6 p.m. This free, family-friendly event is rooted in the East African tradition of Nyama Choma (Swahili for “grilled meat”)—a cookout-style gathering that’s about more than just the food. It’s about connection, joy, and shared experience.

In a recent Events To Know About interview, Besa Gordon sat down with the festival’s curator, Dubai Denis, to get an inside look at the inspiration behind the event and what attendees can expect. “You’re not just pulling up for food,” Denis said. “You’re pulling up to feel connected. I want you to bring your grandmother, your mom, your daughter… This is a family thing. It’s for everyone.”

Presented by The Kicheko Project, a nonprofit cultural hub dedicated to uplifting African heritage and creativity, Choma Festival promises a full day of food, music, dance, and community. Guests can enjoy East African BBQ, vegan options, Caribbean-style DJ sets, dance battles, cultural games, live performances, and more.

Denis, who grew up in Kenya and now calls Seattle home, shared the deeper motivation behind the festival. “Community means a lot to me, because I haven’t had the chance to be around my own family for almost two decades. Choma is for people who crave that sense of connection, who want to feel seen and supported.”

His vision is simple but powerful: “Family is the greatest asset of all. I want kids to see themselves in this space, even if their environment doesn’t show it to them. We lose too much greatness because people don’t see themselves as great.”

Choma Festival is designed to break down barriers, celebrate culture, and create moments of joy and togetherness in a city that’s often known for its social distance. And it’s doing it all with soul, intention, and a side of spice.

Admission is free—just bring your appetite, your people, and a picnic blanket. Whether you're familiar with Nyama Choma or discovering it for the first time, this is an event where everyone is welcome at the table.
