Dignity for Divas’ New Headquarters Expand Their Holistic Approach to Rebuilding Lives

Besa Gordon recently visited the new Dignity for Divas headquarters in South Lake Union to learn how the organization is expanding its approach to women transitioning from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

Led by founder and executive director Nikki Gane, Dignity for Divas focuses on empowering women who have transitioned from living on the streets to temporary or low-income permanent housing through wellness workshops, trauma response education, and internship programs for graduates.

The journey for these women, affectionately called "divas," often begins with a referral from a housing agency. Upon arrival at the academy, they are greeted with a "welcome home" and an immediate focus on healing. The program provides a full year of support, acknowledging that true change—relearning how to live in a stable space, manage bills, and navigate school and family life—takes time and dedicated guidance.

"You lose a lot of yourself when you're going through homelessness. So we want to bring you back to the forefront,” Gane said, addressing future divas.

Inside the academy, the environment is designed to be an experience rooted in positivity. Every visitor begins their journey by picking a "dream card" filled with positive affirmations to shift their mindset. The academy hosts mommy-and-me cooking classes with trained chefs to promote healthy eating and bonding, ensuring that stress is not the only experience shared between mothers and their children.

The space also transforms into a financial literacy classroom where partners like KeyBank teach budgeting and help divas open checking accounts. Additionally, beauty and makeup workshops featuring expert instruction on skincare and professional looks help women rediscover their identity after the trauma of homelessness.

The impact of the organization extends into its new headquarters, where the focus shifts to professional development through an internship program. After a year of healing and growth, graduates of the academy are invited to work for the organization itself. The headquarters provides a real space for real work, featuring a professional call center where divas manage various responsibilities and roles.

With all they have to offer in their new space, Dignity for Divas is giving women the tools to find an upward trajectory and see what is truly possible.

“It's a wonderful opportunity to...be introduced to learning to breathe, to live, not to survive,” Gane said, referring to the programming.
