From Grief to Greatness: Katie Hall's Journey of Purpose and ‘Sacred Pause’

In a recent interview on The Day With Trae, author, filmmaker, and Seattle Film Commissioner KD Hall sat down with guest host Omari Salisbury to discuss her new book, “Sacred Pause,” and the transformative power of grief and focusing one's mission.

Hall holds many titles, including film commissioner, publicist, crisis manager, and founder of the KD Hall Foundation. Her work with Seattle Film Commission focuses on uplifting film educators, film schools, and the young people.

Hall dove into the deeply personal motivation behind “Sacred Pause,” explaining that after the passing of her mother, she was "so deep into depression... that people didn't know." The book details the 30-day sacred pause she took to write it.

The book also delves into the pain of not being present for her mother's death. She added a powerful element to Chapter 11: her mother's own voice, who told her: "You got to tell the truth. I don't care what it is. When things happen in the family, you got to tell the truth,” Hall recalled.

Both Hall and Salisbury respectively shared how losing a parent led to a renewed focus and clarity. For Hall, the grief manifested as inspiration.

"I am a much better storyteller since my mom passed. I hear her voice too at night,” Hall said, noting that after her mother’s passing, everything in her life became about film and journalism, which her mother deeply supported her ambition in pursuing.

Beyond addressing grief, Hall outlined what readers will take away from “Sacred Pause,” including a heavy shoulder to lean on in the myriad of emotional catastrophes that life throws at people. Salisbury summarized this sentiment, saying the biggest crisis we face is often "the crisis of our heart and of our soul.”

“Sacred Pause” is available on Amazon, but readers are encouraged to purchase it at kdhallfoundation.org, where 100% of the profit goes to the KD Hall foundation. Converge Media will host the official book launch on December 5th at 7:00 p.m.
