Heru TchaasAmen and Trae Holiday Call For The Urgent Return of Dr. Maxine Mimms' Critical Conversations
The Day With Trae host Trae Holiday recently sat down with healing artist Heru TchaasAmen to discuss the urgent need to revive Critical Conversations, a community forum originally curated by the late and beloved Dr. Maxine Mimms. Their conversation was both a tribute to Dr. Mimms' legacy and a rallying cry for collective healing in a fractured world.
The Legacy of Dr. Maxine Mimms
For years, Dr. Maxine Mimms was a beacon of wisdom in the region, bringing people together every third Friday of the month at L.E.M.S. Bookstore. TchaasAmen fondly recalled his introduction to the community through Dr. Mimms, describing how she "kicked the shell off my back so I couldn't hide anywhere.”
Following Dr. Mimms' passing in October 2024, a void has been left in the community. Both Holiday and TchaasAmen emphasized that they cannot let her legacy die, noting that prominent elders agree the work must go forward.
A Safe Space Free of Judgment
At its core, Critical Conversations was designed as an open forum with no political, spiritual, or hidden agendas. It was a safe haven where community members could openly share struggles, grief, resources, and global news without fear of judgment.
"Oftentimes as people, we walk around and we hold hurt inside," TchaasAmen said, highlighting how isolation worsens mental and spiritual anguish. He pointed out that while private, one-on-one conversations are important, they can become echo chambers where people only talk to those who see the world exactly as they do. The public circle allowed for healthy contradiction, conflict resolution, and the sharing of best practices rather than prescriptive advice.
The Biology of Collective Healing
As a healing artist, TchaasAmen explained the physical and psychological benefits of these gatherings. From a scientific perspective, positive social interactions release oxytocin and serotonin into the bloodstream, directly lowering cortisol levels induced by stress.
In traditional energy terms, he described this as building a collective "chi field" or frequency pool. By stepping into a space seeded with love, trust, and gratitude, people can jumpstart their personal healing journeys.
Intergenerational Impact
A key pillar of Critical Conversations was its intergenerational nature. Holiday shared an early memory of introducing her son to the circle when he was just seven years old. When Dr. Mimms paused the room to ask about his dreams, the experience of being heard with pure love anchored his understanding of community.
Moving Beyond the Screen
Looking to the future, the goal is to transition away from the isolation of digital boxes and return to face-to-face public spaces. While technology kept the community connected during COVID-19, TchaasAmen stressed that you cannot feel a physical hug across a monitor. Future iterations will likely feature a multifaceted format to accommodate transportation needs, blending digital access with smaller, lounge-style physical pop-ups.
