Keeping the Dreams Alive: Rasheed Romain on Authenticity, Fatherhood, and the ‘Slow Burn’ of Creation
In an era dominated by manicured feeds and the relentless chase of the next viral trend, Seattle-based lifestyle creator Rasheed Romain is advocating for a different approach: honest, community-driven content creation.
Appearing on The Pop-Up! with host The Big O for PNW Influencer & Creator Week at Black Media Matter Studios, Romain opened up about his journey from a newcomer navigating the Seattle Freeze to a father trying to balance a career while keeping his creative aspirations alive.
Creator vs. Influencer
A central theme of the conversation was the distinction between being an "influencer" and being a true content creator. While host The Big O noted that media companies often struggle with the connotations of the word "influencer," Romain explicitly stated his preference for the creator title.
"I have a full-time job. I have a wife, I have a son, managing a lot of things in between," Romain said. "I don't have the time to be influencing—where I'm going to every event and talking about every event. What I can do is share my experience of how I do some things or how things affect me."
For Romain, this means focusing on the genuine joys of life rather than amplifying commercial spaces. Even when participating in typical influencer perks, like a food preview at a Seattle Mariners game, he anchors it in his real life.
"I [took] my son to his first Mariners game, and that felt really true to me," he said. "It wasn't just an influencer thing. It was just, 'Hey, this is how I would do it.'"
Rooted in Culture
As a first-generation Haitian American who spent time living in Haiti and speaks both Creole and French, Romain’s cultural roots heavily shape his worldview and identity. He spoke with immense pride about his family’s resilience and the legacy handed down by his father.
"My grandpa and my dad, they made the best of the situation that they were in when they came to the country and tried to work hard to accomplish things," he said. "I've been allotted a life that he created for me. And now I'm using that to build up not just my kid's life, but my family as well."
Romain’s Evolution
Now that his son is almost two years old, Romain is navigating the delicate boundary of how much of his personal life and vulnerability to share on the internet.
"There’s a lot of vulnerability in just speaking to the camera," he said, noting that connecting authentically often means moving past that intimidation. His next creative chapter involves a recent TikTok rebrand, a shift aiming to spread that message that parenthood and adult responsibilities do not mean abandoning personal growth.
Recently, he negotiated a daily block of time with his wife to document the pursuit of his long-held side dreams. His current side quests include mastering photography with the goal of getting published, and learning the process behind writing and recording a song.
A Slow Burn toward Inspiration
Ultimately, Romain views his digital presence not as a tool for corporate persuasion, but as a space for genuine connection. When asked how he approaches influencing culture, he rejected the premise entirely in favor of something deeper.
"I don't feel like influencing is my goal. I hope to maybe inspire," he said. "I'm a strong believer that anything that you really want to do, you can accomplish with time and dedication.”
