Malik Phipps Brings Purpose, Light, and Seattle Culture to The Pop-Up!

During PNW Influencer & Creator Week on The Pop-Up!, Seattle lifestyle and travel creator Malik Phipps joined guest host Sean Goode, alongside streamer Lez2P. Phipps delved into the intentionality behind digital storytelling, the responsibility of Black creators, and how his move across the country sparked a thriving online community.

The Creator's Responsibility

Reflecting on a recent plea by NBA star Jaylen Brown for Black influencers to push past mere entertainment and address societal issues, Phipps addressed what it means to carry a platform with purpose.

"I think if you have a platform... it falls in our realm to take that on and show what it means to be like yourself," he said. "I think that in and of itself can inspire somebody."

He emphasized that living authentically and intentionally serves as a model for future generations.

"This is a choice every day to be a loving husband, devoted son, family member, brother," he said. "I think if we live in that and showcase that to the world... we're doing our job as Black individuals to make the next generation's life easier."

Finding Community and Accessibility in the Pacific Northwest

Originally hailing from Whites Creek, Tennessee, outside of Nashville, Phipps relocated to the Pacific Northwest three years ago after his wife accepted a professional opportunity in Seattle. Arriving with "everything I ever owned in the back of a Nissan Maxima," he recalled initially feeling isolated without his lifelong support system.

To bridge that gap, Phipps began sharing his day-to-day experiences, including exploring local gems, cooking, and venturing into nature. His outdoor content, featuring camping and hiking trips with his wife, quickly resonated with viewers.

"A lot of the comments I got were just like, 'It's cool seeing a Black couple do this kind of stuff because we're often not in those spaces,'" he said.

Through his platforms on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, Phipps aims to dismantle the perception that outdoor recreation and local travel are out of reach.

"People make traveling seem like it's so out of our reach... just like the camping thing," he said. "When you do it, you get this experience and an overwhelming sense of how small what you may be going through in your neighborhood or city really is."

Navigating Digital Noise with Light and Integrity

In a digital landscape often dominated by viral outrage and sensationalism, Phipps remains dedicated to wholesome, uplifting content, he said, candidly sharing how feedback from family helped keep him grounded as his audience expanded across different age groups.

"What I'm doing needs to be something that is light," he said. "I don't need to be promoting nothing that's not going in that direction."

Staying true to his mission has yielded steady growth and meaningful real-world connections across the region.

"Having the minor success that I have had has shown me that the path I'm on is right," Phipps said. "Failure is not an option. That's how I try to live my life and how I record."
