Northwest Icon Tra’Renee: Bridging Portland’s Black Community with Purpose-Driven Media

For nearly two decades, Northwest icon Tra’Renee has been a foundational pillar of the media scene in Portland. From her legendary 15-year tenure as an on-air personality for JAM’N 107.5 at iHeartMedia, she has evolved into an Emmy Award-winning host and producer, continually using her distinct voice for community support, joy, and collective uplift.

The Converge Media crew recently traveled to the Rose City to document Tra’Renee’s journey and the unparalleled role she plays in the Pacific Northwest media landscape.

From Social Work to Emmy Winner

Tra’Renee’s work is deeply informed by a skillset that transcends the entertainment industry: she is a clinically licensed social worker by trade. This background allows her to be a sincere, raw, and honest host, who focuses on being a trained listener—a strength she believes is critical to genuine conversation.

"I am a lover of life and of people and I just try and use…this voice as a platform for people supporting people in any way, shape, or form that I can,” she said.

Tra’Renee pinpointed her philosophy and approach to media with the "five E's": to empower, elevate, educate, enlighten, and entertain. This purpose-driven ethos drives her professional endeavors, including her Emmy Award-winning work as the inaugural host of Afternoon Live on KATU-TV, a milestone that helped open doors for her production company Tra’Renee Media.

Situations and Conversations: Blowing the Lid Off Shame

In February 2021, Tra’Renee launched her own show, Situations and Conversations with Tra’Renee, which is currently in its fifth season. The program, which airs on Portland’s CW and streams on the Coin Plus app, originated from Tra’Renee recognizing a community-wide need to discuss recurring issues on a broader scale.

"Having conversations is where it starts to make any real change or progress,” she said.

In her words, the show aims to "blow the lid off" the shame and stigma surrounding difficult topics with a platform for raw, honest dialogue. Content ranges from heavy subjects to pop culture, all dedicated to perpetually infusing community information.

A Bridge and a Partner in the Pacific Northwest

Tra’Renee has served as a bridge for Portland's Black community for years, helping transplants and newcomers navigate and integrate into the local scene. Her influence continues to expand through her partnership with Converge Media, a collaboration fundamentally based on aligned energy and a shared interest in building up Black community from Seattle to Portland and everywhere in between.

Beyond her current hosting work, Tra’Renee’s big-picture vision is to be a filmmaker and executive producer of projects, including documentaries and scripted television with a strong community tie-in. Whether she’s behind or in front of the camera, Tra’Renee moves with the same unyielding commitment to uplift the community at its core.

"One of my gifts is being able to assess other people's superpowers and then assisting them in elevating. That actually brings me the most joy,” she said.
