Pacific Northwest Ballet Revives Kent Stowell's 'Firebird' for a New Generation
The stage at McCaw Hall is set for a dramatic return as the Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) brings back Founding Artistic Director Kent Stowell’s epic, one-act story ballet, “Firebird,” after a two-decade hiatus. From March 13 through 22, 2026, Seattle audiences will be treated to a theatrical spectacle featuring exuberant sets by the legendary Ming Cho Lee and opulent costumes by Theoni V. Aldredge, all set to Igor Stravinsky’s matchless score.
This highly anticipated program balances the classic grandeur of “Firebird” with two powerful modern works: Alejandro Cerrudo’s playful “Little mortal jump” and Ulysses Dove’s fierce, athleticism-driven “Red Angels.”
Stowell’s rendition of “Firebird” is more than a simple revival—it’s a revitalization. It honors the 1910 tradition while making the human love story between Tsarevich Ivan and the Princess more poignant and tender from its inception. The legendary Firebird, in this version, becomes less of a supernatural agent and more a powerful source of inspiration, a message of self-empowerment and resilience that profoundly resonates with contemporary life and the ethos of community-centered strength.
