Philip ‘Sharp Skills’ Jacobs Elevates Northwest Hip-Hop with New Residency and Book
The Pacific Northwest arts scene continues to evolve as local artists find innovative ways to showcase their work and build community. Philip "Sharp Skills" Jacobs, a multifaceted artist, is at the forefront of this movement, recently launching The Rebel Residency, the first-ever hip-hop residency in Tacoma, Washington. He recently joined host Trae Holiday on “The Day With Trae” to dive into it.
Building a Local Institution
The Rebel Residency was born from Jacobs’ desire to elevate the standard for local hip-hop performances. Drawing inspiration from major residencies in Las Vegas, Jacobs sought to create a recurring, high-level show rooted in the genre.
Looking at Tacoma and Seattle, he observed a creative void, noting that while major national hip-hop acts frequently tour the region, local talent is often confined to smaller, makeshift stages.
To change this narrative, Jacobs personally funded the residency, booking the venue and assembling a professional team that included a four-piece band and a DJ. The residency serves as a platform for other elite artists to be seen on professional sound stages.
Literary and Musical Contributions
Beyond the stage, Jacobs is expanding his reach as an author and recording artist. Jacob’s new fiction book, Gladiator, uses a parable-style format to tell stories about characters facing universal life challenges like divorce, financial setbacks, and sickness.
“That's really how we learn the most as humans is through storytelling,” he said.
In addition to his writing, Jacobs released a new single titled "City of Destiny" on April 17th, featuring artist Tara Chugh. The song is a precursor to his upcoming album, Port of Tacoma, set for release on June 26th. The new music reflects Jacobs' personal growth and his feeling of being "fully in alignment" as both a man and an artist.
A Call to Support Local Art
The emergence of projects like the Rebel Residency highlights the importance of community support for local artists. Jacobs emphasized the need for high expectations and professional standards within the local scene to break through perceived regional ceilings.
As Jacobs seeks to expand these creative endeavors, he encourages the community not to let great ideas sit idle, but to find the partners and investments necessary to bring their brilliance to the world.
The next show of The Rebel Residency’s four-part run is scheduled for June 27th at Edison Square in Tacoma. Get your tickets here.
