PREVIEW This Week’s Episode of Back2Besa: Wine, Art, and the Power of A Community United

Back2Besa is back with a week of highlighting incredible community gathering spaces up and down the greater Puget Sound region. The power of unity was on full display in the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute for Scope Screenings, to the Tukwila Community Center for the Free Community Play Day, all the way to the Central District for Walk The Block.

Celebrating One Year of WeRise’s Wine Club

We’re off to a strong start with the one-year anniversary celebration of WeRise’s wine club in downtown Seattle where founder and CEO of WeRise Jamila Conley unveiled her new private label wine. The celebration brought together WeRise’s tight-knit community in support of the new private label and Conley’s greater mission to uplift underrepresented wineries and winemakers as a Black LGBTQ+ business owner herself.

Walk The Block: Turning The Central District Into An Art Gallery

Next up, we’re heading to the Central District for Wa Na Wari’s annual takeover where they turn the historical Seattle neighborhood into a living breathing art festival. Everything from musicians, painters, sculptures, and dancers flooded the streets to create a momentous celebration of Black creative excellence in the Emerald City.

Commemorating 10 Years of SpoonFed Training

We head south to Tukwila for the celebration of SpoonFed Training’s new gym and 10 years of business. Owned by LaTaunya Witherspoon, SpoonFed has endured the ups and downs of business for a decade with the unbelievable support of their community that was on full display. Not only are they out here creating space for people to come together, but they are literally changing lives through workouts and wellness.

Free Community Play Day: A Place For Access and Representation

We’re staying in Tukwila for the third annual Free Community Play Day hosted by the King County Play Equity Coalition, which gave youth and families the opportunity to engage with a wide range of activities for free, including soccer, hockey, and wheelchair basketball. At its core, the Play Day was a representation of the Coalition’s mission to make recreation as accessible as possible for underrepresented communities in King County.

Women In Film Take Over Scope Screenings

Circling back up to the Central District, the September Scope Screenings at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute brought together Seattle’s creative community for a night of uplifting women in film. The evening showcased the importance of creating space for women’s stories to be illuminated and celebrated, particularly those told by women of color.
