Preview What’s on Back2Besa this Week
If you’re looking for an episode that feels like community, culture, and connection all wrapped into one — this week’s show is absolutely for you.
This week’s Back2Besa is one of those lineups that really reflects movement. Not just physically, from city to city, but emotionally too — through the people we meet, the stories we carry, and the moments that remind us why community-centered storytelling matters so much.
So if you haven’t already… grab your snacks, because here’s what’s coming up on the show this weekend.
Pulling Up to Mount Vernon: Community Radio at KSVR
We’re kicking things off with a trip up north to Mount Vernon, where Curtis “Cuddy” Delgado and I spent time at KSVR 91.7 FM — a community-based radio station that’s been serving the Skagit Valley for decades.
While we were there, we sat down live with DJ Defkawn, a longtime radio host who blends hip-hop, public affairs, and real conversations rooted in community.
This segment is such a reminder of the power of local media, and why spaces like community radio will always matter.
Support Black Business Spotlight: The Makeup Within
Next, we’re heading to Milton, Washington for a Support Black Business uplift with my girl Dianna Kennedy, the owner of The Makeup Within Beauty Studios.
Dianna is building something special — not just a beauty brand, but a true community-centered space that empowers women, uplifts other professionals, and reminds us that beauty really does start from within.
This is the kind of business spotlight that’s bigger than glam. It’s purpose, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment all in one.
A Pacific Northwest Rewind: Abby’s First Trip to Seattle and Portland
We’re also taking a rewind to one of my favorite memories — when my good friend Abby Plaatjes came to Seattle all the way from South Africa for the very first time.
And of course, I couldn’t let her visit the Northwest and only see one city.
So we hopped on Amtrak and took a road trip down to Portland, where we hit a Trail Blazers game, made stops around the Rose City, and soaked up all the PNW vibes together.
And when we got back to Seattle? The adventure wasn’t over — because Abby also got to experience her very first Seattle Kraken hockey game at Climate Pledge Arena.
It was such a beautiful reminder that you really have to move around to fall in love with this region.
Representation in Hockey: United By Hockey Mobile Museum
With hockey season in full swing, we’re also revisiting a powerful moment from the NHL Winter Classic — a visit to the United By Hockey Mobile Museum.
This space is more than jerseys and memorabilia… it’s interactive, immersive, and intentional about celebrating the culture and future of the sport.
I was joined by filmmaker Kwame Mason, whose documentary Soul on Ice centers the stories of Black hockey players who helped shape the game.
It’s such an important conversation about representation, inclusion, and access in sports.
Heading North to Alaska: Gamers Alaska and the Mariners Care Foundation
One of the most impactful stories in this episode takes us all the way to Anchorage, Alaska.
We’re spotlighting Gamers Alaska — a youth baseball and softball program creating real opportunities for young athletes, even through eight months of winter and limited access to indoor facilities.
With support from the Seattle Mariners and the Mariners Care Foundation, a new neighborhood training space is now helping kids chase their dreams year-round.
This segment is about more than baseball — it’s about access, mentorship, and showing young people that no dream is too far.
Art, Culture, and Storytelling at Métier Brewing
And finally, we’re ending the show back in Seattle’s Central District with a creative stop at Métier Brewing Company.
In honor of National Beer Can Appreciation Day, I sat down with owner Rodney Hines and artist Damon Brown, also known as Creative Lou, to talk about the meaning and storytelling behind Métier’s beer can designs.
Because in this space, the can isn’t just packaging — it’s art, culture, and community.
Every design tells a story, and once you hear the intention behind it, you’ll never look at it the same way again.
This Week’s Episode Is About the Journey
This episode really is about movement — where we’ve been, who we’ve met along the way, and how these stories continue to shape what’s next.
I hope you’ll tune in and feel the love, the purpose, and the community in every segment.
Back2Besa airs Saturday night at 10:30 PM on FOX 13 Seattle and replays Sunday morning at 10 AM on FOX 13+.
And as always… no matter what happens this week, please keep that energy high.
