Ready to Rise: Jamie-Michelle Charles Delivers Breathtaking Wendy Solo at Colman Commons
The Seattle waterfront was recently flooded with pure musical magic as Jamie-Michelle Charles, starring as Wendy in Acts on Stage's Teen Summer Musical production Peter Pan: Ready to Rise, delivered a breathtaking sneak-peek performance of the show, happening this weekend.
Featured on The Day With Trae with host Trae Holiday, the performance was recorded at Colman Commons, the Seattle waterfront's premier art gallery and event space housed in the historic Colman Building.
Led by Executive Director Ashleigh McCurdy, Colman Commons has quickly established itself as a sanctuary for Black creativity, connection, and joy. The elevated and intentional atmosphere of the gallery served as the perfect backdrop to celebrate local Black youth and the rich tradition of independent Black storytelling in Pioneer Square.
Bringing her immense talent to the forefront, Jamie-Michelle's emotive performance of Wendy’s solo captured the core themes of identity, resilience, and growth that define this year’s adapted production. Pouring her heart into the lyrics, she sang:
"Could I make it better? Oh, mother used to say I could be whatever... I'm just a girl in a great big world. It's so much bigger than I've ever known. Still, I can't help but want to make it better."
Under the direction of Isiah Anderson Jr., Peter Pan: Ready to Rise re-imagines the classic tale for 2026, centering on how a young Black Peter Pan prepares himself to overcome obstacles of fear and societal expectations. The production is a beloved local tradition that brings together dozens of talented young artists across the region, fostering self-confidence, pride, and life lessons both on and off the stage.
With only four exclusive performances scheduled this weekend, August 28th through 30th at McCaw Hall, now is the time to secure your seats. The all-inclusive journey is an event Seattle families won’t want to miss.
