The 12th Annual Reign of Style: A Masterclass in Community and Creativity

The Seattle hair community recently converged for an energetic display of artistry and innovation at the 12th Annual Reign of Style Hair Competition and Show. The event brought together local stylists, barbers, cosmetology schools, beauty entrepreneurs, and more for a day of live competition and creative expression at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall.

Aisha Ellis Asim, the producer of Reign of Style, emphasized the core mission of the event, which is to provide a platform for creative professionals in the beauty industry.

"Hair stylists, we love the opportunity to be able to show our creative side. We don't get to do that every day,” she said, explaining that the stage offers the opportunity for artists to move freely and feel celebrated.

Host of the event Trae Holiday described the event as an incredible showcase for talent and a chance to connect with the local creative community. Holiday noted that the event is deeply rooted in heritage, celebrating art forms that have been a part of Black culture for generations.

"We may be 7% of the population in Seattle in terms of Black folks, but we are doing it,” she said.

For local vendors, the show offered an opportunity to engage with an enthusiastic audience and build new connections. Autumm Coles, co-owner of Zara Joe Beauty Supply, addressed the misconception that Seattle lacks a thriving Black community, describing it as not only present but "thriving" and "hungry" for more opportunities.

"Being in an atmosphere where we get to be us is amazing,” she said.

The celebratory and supportive environment was also felt by model Treivon Daniels, a first-time attendee who won the "Best Face" makeup competition. Daniels was struck by the atmosphere and found the community deeply supportive.

"It felt good because there's a bunch of people who look like me here," Daniels shared, "And it just feels good being around people who are supporting you and who are like you."

As the event looks toward its 13th year, the organizers and participants encourage everyone to attend for networking, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
