Last Friday, Colman Commons hosted an extraordinary evening of artistic excellence and Black culture with Thriller Night, celebrating the debut solo exhibition of artist Cal Bonner titled Creation Over Elimination. The Halloween-themed event transformed the space into a high-energy creative haven featuring a live DJ, live performances, a costume contest, and the Transformation Lab complete with ghoul makeup, custom fangs, tooth gems, and live tattoos.
A central highlight of the night was the presence of celebrity artist JohnBorn, who pulled up to paint live alongside his mentee, Bonner. Famous for creating custom work for icons like Floyd Mayweather and The Game, JohnBorn shared inspiring words on the artist's grind, emphasizing that "being consistent is the key to everything" as he expressed pride in watching Bonner's evolution from picking up his very first brush to filling a gallery with top-tier art.
The synergy between JohnBorn and Bonner brought an inspiring creative frequency to Colman Commons, reinforcing its commitment to supporting Black creative excellence. By blending mentorship, live artistry, and community celebration, Thriller Night delivered an unforgettable night for Seattle's art community and marked a major milestone in Cal Bonner's artistic journey.
