Tracing Roots: Black Family Heritage Celebration Comes to Seattle This October

Are you ready to unlock the stories and secrets of your lineage? The Black Genealogy Research Group of Seattle, in partnership with the Black Heritage Society of Washington State, is set to host a groundbreaking Black Family Heritage Celebration that promises to help you uncover your rich historical roots!

This free, must-attend genealogy event will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Holgate Street Church of Christ from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Don't just read about history—come and find your place in it.

Black Heritage Society President Stephanie Johnson-Toliver shared that  “this event addresses the growing interest among Black families in understanding their genealogical background.” Tracing a family history that often involves the complex, painful, and resilient journey through the South—from Arkansas and Mississippi to Florida and Texas—requires specialized knowledge, and this event brings it straight to you.

  • Keynote Speaker: Hear from the renowned historian and published author, Esther Hall Mumford. Her insights into local and national Black history will inspire and equip you.

  • Special Workshop: Gain practical research skills from family history keepers Maisha Barnett and Ryan Donaldson in a dedicated session as they share their personal journey's

  • Archival Access: Dive deep into the Black Heritage Society's extensive archives— find out how to make an appointment to research primary sources connected directly with Washington State Black history.

  • Local Wisdom: A unique opportunity to learn from long-standing local families with deep roots in Washington State who have already spent countless hours researching their own ancestry, and you share yours. 

  • Food & Fellowship: A light lunch will be provided for all attendees, fostering a communal environment perfect for connecting and sharing stories.
